In December 2005, Michael began his journey forward when APSI became his guardian. He resided in a home with roommates before transitioning to a living facility where he could embrace greater independence with provider services. Throughout this journey, Michael consistently received the unwavering support of his family and the county board. Still, no relationship was more important to him than the one he shared with his grandmother.
Michael was a man who found comfort in simple pleasures, taking walks and spending precious time with his grandmother. These moments became the foundation of his days, providing him with the stability and connection he craved. Eventually, he decided to leave his community home and move in with his grandmother, where he felt most at peace.
Michael was learning to understand the roles of the people supporting him. As he grew, he began to see that his team was there to assist and empower him rather than direct his choices. This understanding flourished when he was introduced to a new provider who opened up new worlds for him. Together, they would venture out to concerts and fairs, experiences that brought joy and excitement to Michael's life. Yet even these outings came with challenges. Michael would frequently refuse to go if it meant leaving his grandmother behind.

When his beloved grandmother passed away, Michael resiliently navigated the challenging transition and grief. Though he had to move once again, this experience became a catalyst for tremendous personal growth. Michael began to collaborate more effectively with his team, developing a deeper understanding of his services and learning to maximize the support available to him.
Michael's progress led him to his own apartment, a place where he discovered the freedom of unlimited alone time while maintaining his important relationships. He continued working with his provider, finding joy in spending time with others and pursuing his favorite activities, such as attending concerts, watching movies, and visiting his provider's farm. Over the years, he blossomed into someone who loved to explore the world and the people in it.
Although Michael initially had concerns about the court process and the responsibilities he would assume once he no longer had a guardian, his dedicated team helped him discover the exciting possibilities that restoration could bring. He came to understand that this step would enhance his ability to make his own decisions while maintaining valuable relationships with those who supported him.

On April 21, 2025, nearly twenty years after APSI first became his guardian, Michael achieved his goal: he no longer needed a guardian, marking the end of APSI's formal role in his life and the beginning of a new chapter.

Michael's transformation from someone learning to navigate his support system to a confident individual capable of making decisions on his own (while knowing when he needs help) demonstrates the power of patience, understanding, and excellent teamwork. With continued confidence in his abilities and the ongoing presence of his supportive team, Michael embraced his new chapter with enthusiasm, ready to make his own decisions while surrounded by those who celebrated his achievement.
