Who are Medical Specialists?

APSI is available to clients 24/7, 365 days year-round thanks to our Medical Specialists.

No matter the time of day, there is always a Med Spec on call to answer the phone. Med Specs help Protective Services Representatives (PSRs) navigate tough medical situations and provide consent for medical appointments and procedures.

“I see my job as to support the PSR... I see myself as an assistant to the PSR,” Med Spec Christy said.

Medical Specialists are an integral part of an individual’s team; a piece of the puzzle that APSI builds to best support clients.

“We’re part of a very close team of APSI Reps and Medical Specialists and the team from the counties and in the ICFs,” PSR Mardessa said. “We’re very integrated within a team.”

Even on holidays, Medical Specialists offer their invaluable services to our clients. In 2023 alone, our Med Spec team responded to over 8,000 after-hours calls.

“We are here 24/7... Life happens 24/7, emergencies happen 24/7,” Christy said.

Medical Specialists link information from different sources to see the bigger picture of a client’s situation and their health. They inspect client notes and talk to reps and medical professionals to make the right decision for each individual’s circumstance. “They ask the questions that we may not think to ask... They see the whole medical spectrum of our client,” Mardessa said.

APSI relies on our Med Specs to make informed decisions about the health of our clients; without them, our job would be far harder.

“I think you need to care about what you’re doing,” Christy said. “If you don’t care about what you’re doing, if you don’t realize that what APSI does is ultimately for the health and safety and benefit of the client, then I don’t know if you could be a Med Spec.”
