Sarah Strengthens Her Voice Through Partners in Policymaking

APSI client Sarah was recently spotlighted by the Carroll County Board of Developmental Disabilities after completing the seven-course Partners in Policymaking training offered through People First of Ohio.

Throughout the program, Sarah learned more about lawmakers, legislation, public policy, and the importance of speaking out about issues affecting people with developmental disabilities. The training also provided guidance on engaging with local county boards of developmental disabilities and communicating directly with policymakers and elected representatives.

Upon completing the program, Sarah received a certificate and a special pin identifying her as a Partners in Policymaking graduate. The pin can be worn when meeting with political representatives and serves as recognition of the knowledge and advocacy skills she developed through the training.

Sarah’s participation in Partners in Policymaking is one of several ways she continues to build her confidence and strengthen her ability to advocate for herself and others. She is also an active participant in APSI’s LetMeDoIt initiative, a technology-based program designed to help people identify personal goals, break those goals into manageable steps, make informed choices, and become more independent in their daily lives.

While Partners in Policymaking helps participants better understand how to make their voices heard within their communities and government, LetMeDoIt provides tools that support greater choice and control in everyday life. Together, opportunities like these demonstrate that self-advocacy can take many forms, from speaking with policymakers about issues affecting the developmental disabilities community to using technology to pursue personal goals.

APSI is proud of Sarah for continuing to learn, grow, and use her voice. Her commitment is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people are given meaningful opportunities to build their skills, express their preferences, and take an active role in shaping their own futures.
