Thanks to the Belmont County Board of Developmental Disabilities, APSI clients and sibling artists, Danny and Bobby Yokum, recently had the opportunity to share their creativity with the community through Beyond the Canvas: The Power of Unbound Expression, an art exhibit highlighting the work of artists with developmental disabilities.
Both brothers, who are nonverbal, used their artwork as a powerful form of communication —expressing thoughts, emotions, and experiences in ways that words cannot. Danny’s piece, titled Danny’s Dream, features layered textures and imaginative elements that reflect how he sees and feels the world. He was filled with pride and excitement seeing it displayed.
Bobby’s piece, titled Bobby’s Bounty, showcases his independence through bold colors, distinct shapes, and a sense of humor that invites viewers into his perspective. While each brother has a unique artistic style, the experience of creating and exhibiting their work was something meaningful that they were able to share.
Opportunities like this highlight the importance of access to creative spaces where artists can be recognized and celebrated for their talents. Danny and Bobby’s work is a reminder that expression takes many forms, and that every person deserves to be seen and every voice heard!
